Kongress

Researching the barriers to engagement for Neurodivergent creatives in the arts

'We recommend that all Arts organisations, funders, venues, and charities working in the arts have a Neurodiversity Arts Policy with an integrated Neurodivergent arts strategy conceived, written, maintained, and overseen by Neurodivergent creatives who should be paid for their consultation.'

What is Kongress?

  • Kongress was about identifying barriers to engagement in the arts as both a maker and as a participant or audience member. Barriers may be encountered in arts traditionalism, systems, applying for funding, finding opportunities, networking, and accessing arts within organisations and venues, physical or mental health, it may even be other people. Barriers can be both attitudinal and physical.

  • Kongress is an ongoing human-centered action research project helping to understand the challenges and opportunities for neurodivergent artists. Kongress is led by neurodivergent practitioners, who have created a positive and encouraging environment for research.

  • The importance neurodivergent people play within the creative economy is now finally gaining increased recognition and respect through the work of Flow, and other neurodivergent artists acting as advocates for the sector.
